PRESS RELEASE - U-Need-A-Cab Purchase TaxiCam

U-Need-A-Cab has signed a contract to purchase 180 4GB "G5" Dual Cam TaxiCams from VerifEye Technologies, with deliveries commencing in April 2009 and completion of all installations by September 2009. The cameras will be installed by Spectrum Communications at their Wellington Street facility.
U-Need-A-Cab is the largest taxi company in London and has a history of early adoption of technology, especially when it can improve service levels and/or the safety of its drivers and customers.
Geoff Parkins, the President of U-Need-A-Cab, praised the thoroughness of City staff that resulted in the specification of a camera system tailored to the unique needs of the City of London. "It would have been easy for the City to just specify any old camera system and then walk away. However, that would have been a disservice to the taxi industry and the travelling public, and a false economy. We need cameras that will operate reliably over a 5-6 year life-cycle, and, hopefully, longer. For the camera systems to be effective, we need image quality that can satisfy the requirements of our court system while meeting all the privacy requirements of the Province of Ontario. The City has done its job, now we, together with the camera manufacturer and their authorized installation shop, must do our part."
Terry Walker, Vice-President of Marketing and Sales, commented that, while the City's review and evaluation process had taken longer than usual, the fact that it had been so thorough would result in a camera program that would be more robust and effective. "City staff were very well informed with respect to the lessons learned by other jurisdictions and clearly used this knowledge to develop a very comprehensive specification. We are very encouraged by the professionalism and enthusiasm of the management teams at U-Need-A-Cab, and Spectrum Communications, and look forward to delivering and installing all the cameras well in advance of the October deadline".
